Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is
I flew back from the Bay Area today.
I love flying (and not just because I love my pals at Southwest!). I love flying because something magical happens to my creative bandwidth. It’s like a millennial witch comes and zaps me, and all of the sudden creative blocks and issues I’ve been having all make sense.
Today, I was flying and I was thinking about my online to IRL BFF Kasiemobi. We did a group boudoir shoot with Suma Jane Dark this weekend, and we went to grab a bite afterwards. As we were walking, Kassie talked about the roadblocks she faces when trying to do creative work every damn day.
“It’s like, I feel like I have to have all of this stuff prepped and done. I could do a little everyday, but I feel like I’m not doing enough if it’s a little. I want to be producing content, but I feel like I’m going it alone. I need a community.”
We continued chatting, and I realized that Kassie wanted a community, and a really good way to do that (and get some skin in the game) was to do a 30 day challenge. I whipped out my phone, and we filmed the first of 30 daily creativity challenges (you can view the video of where a pidgeon SHAT on Kasiemobi’s hand here.). Everyday, Kassie will post a 2–3 minute video on Facebook — OR FACE THE CONSEQUENCES. To raise the stakes, she’s posting the video daily on FB, and for everyday she doesn’t do it, she has to donate $20 to Planned Parenthood of California. (Mixing creativity with politics, because it’s 2017 YALL.)
So, I’m starting a 30-day challenge — starting tomorrow (errr, today for some of you) that starts June 1st.
DETAILS
- Decide on a daily creative thing you wanna do, whether it’s write a 500 word blog post, spend 1 hour doing ____ thing, etc. It must be MEASURABLE.
- $50 to join a Facebook group of about a dozen people (#NETWERK), with a commitment to donate $5, $10 or $20 per day you don’t do the damn thing. Yours truly will call you out EVERY DAMN DAY and hold you accountable. As my friend Alison said it best, “I know The Huntswoman will come for me if I don’t do it.”
- You can stockpile. That is to say, if your goal is to sketch a mermaid portrait a day, you can do 7 at a time.
- You MUST share daily to either your Instagram or Facebook page.
